What CreditScore is, and how it's built
An independent explainer of our mission, editorial process, and the limits of what this site can tell you about your own credit.
Making credit mechanics legible
Credit scoring can feel opaque even though the underlying mechanics are fairly well documented. CreditScore exists to translate that documentation — scoring-factor research, federal statute text, and regulator guidance — into structured, plain-language explanations and working calculators, so readers can reason about their own credit file without guesswork.
Built around documented scoring factors, statutes, and regulator guidance.
Working calculators turn credit concepts into usable planning scenarios.
How a page gets built
Source evaluation
Content is drafted from publicly available scoring-model documentation, the text of federal consumer-protection statutes, and guidance published by regulators such as the CFPB. Secondary sources are used only to corroborate, not originate, a claim.
Tool verification
Calculators are built against known, standard formulas — simple utilization ratios and amortizing-interest payoff math — and are verified against standard formulas before publishing.
Editorial independence
CreditScore has no financial relationship with any credit bureau, scoring company, lender, or debt collector. Content decisions are made independently of any commercial arrangement.
Corrections
Pages are reviewed on a rolling basis. When a factual error or outdated figure is identified, the page is corrected directly rather than left as-is.
Limitations
CreditScore is not a credit bureau and does not access, store, or display any individual's actual credit report or score. Figures reflect typical audited profiles, not a specific individual file. Scoring models are proprietary and can weight factors differently than the general explanations provided here.
Ethics
We do not promise score increases, dispute outcomes, or approval odds. We do not sell credit-repair services or accept payment to feature a specific lender, product, or bureau.
